When choosing eyeglasses, consider having their lenses treated with “anti-reflective” (AR) coatings, which consist of applications of several layers of metal oxides to the front and back surfaces of the lenses. Each layer is designed to block reflected light so that glare is reduced.
An AR coating improves light transmission through the lens for night driving and helps photochromic lenses reduce glare in bright sunlight. Vision is also enhanced with the elimination of annoying reflections and halos around lights. Moreover, individual looking at you will be able to see you better because the reflected glare off the front of your lenses will be eliminated.
Without anti-reflective coatings, external reflections otherwise mask a clear view of your eyes.
Anti-reflective coatings are especially beneficial for polycarbonate, high-index, and aspheric lenses, which all reflect more light than regular lenses. Anti-reflective coating also is a good idea for sunglasses, because it eliminates glare from sunlight reflecting into your eyes from the back surface of tinted lenses when the sun is behind you.
