To remove the debris that collects on eyeglass lenses, begin by rinsing your lenses thoroughly with tap water. Never simply rub your lenses with a cloth, such as your shirt, as this only serves to grind the debris into the surface of the lens, creating fine scratches.

After rinsing, spray the lenses with a cleaner designed especially for eyeglasses. Do NOT use window cleaners that contain ammonia, which can damage the lens coating.

Alternatively, apply a drop or two of mild liquid dish detergent to each lens. Gently rub the cleaner into the lenses with your thumb and forefinger, and then rinse thoroughly with hot water. Dry with a lint-free cloth made of 100 percent cotton or a microfiber. Never use such paper products as paper towels or facial tissue to clean your eyeglass lenses. They will scratch the lenses.

To avoid dirt and smudges, always take your glasses off with two hands using the arms of the frame and avoid touching the lenses. Keep your glasses in a case when they are not in use.
